You Look Often Stress, Try Turning Off Your Phone Notifications

The digital revolution does offer us many conveniences, both in terms of communication and work.
Unfortunately, unrelenting social connections can increase the risk of anxiety, fatigue and stress, according to a survey of the American Psychological Association (APA).
In a report entitled "Stress in America: Coping with Change," APA polled 3,500 productive-age adults in the US for more than a month.
Researchers found that 86% of participants were categorized as "constant checkers", ie routinely checking emails, sending and reading incoming texts, and monitoring social media accounts due to the always-on notification.
Although communication access is becoming easier, digital communication is relentlessly assessed as researchers can create a large amount of stress and anxiety, mainly due to endless work.

Participants identified as constant examiners reported an average stress level of 5.3 to 6 on a scale from 1 to 10 (where 1 was "virtually no stress" and 10 were "often depressed and stressed").

Generally, stress levels above 5 are characterized by symptoms; difficulty sleeping soundly, often feel less excited, heart pounding and anxious each time notification about jobs entered, to easily angry.

Interestingly, 65% of all respondents said that the disabling of periodic notifications and digital detoxification was important to maintain their sanity, even though only 28% actually did.

"Taking digital detox is one of the most useful ways to manage stress related to technology use," says Lynn Bufka, Ph.D., APA's associate executive director for research and practice policy. "Constant inspectors can benefit from limiting the use of technology and their presence in social media."

Although it seems difficult to separate from the digital world, Bufka advises you to turn off notifications at certain times, ie while in the gym, driving, enjoying the meal, 30 minutes before bed, and vacation.

You can also schedule time off for at least 1 day on weekends or holidays. Simply turning off the notifications at those times, can avoid you from anxiety, fatigue and work-related stress.
